The Milagro Beanfield War is one of two books I recommend to those exploring Santa Fe and northern New Mexico for the first time. Written by John Nichols, a Taos resident who defected from New York City in the 1970's, he still makes an occasional appearance at local bookstores and other venues. The Milagro Beanfield War is a story of a small town resident in Milgaro, New Mexico who defends his right to water his small beanfield against large corporate interests and wealthy land owners. It is a feel-good story, but also delves into the conflicts created by the changing population of New Mexico. It is beautifully written and is richly steeped in Spanish folklore. The book was made into a movie by Robert Redford and starred Ruben Blades as Joe Mondragon.
